NO LEHMAN BROS. IN INDIA
I happened to run in to one of my friends on Dalal Street. He was eating
'Khaman Dhokla' in a farsan shop.
'How r u, I asked?'
'Fine.' He was looking glum but gestured me to join him.
As I bit into the tasty dhokla with tangy chutney on the Friday afternoon,
which was fast turning into a 'Manic Friday' as per Dalal Street lingo, he
was staring at the Bull near the entrance, which overnight had become a
Russian bear hugging everybody that passed the Street.
My friend is a well-respected Dalal Street dada with an answer to every
shareholder' s query.
'What went wrong with Lehman Brothers?' I asked.
'Lots of things. If the founder brothers, Henry, Emanuel and Mayer were
alive this wouldn't have happened. Lehman Brothers were more than a
150-year-old company. But yet, it had no Lehman in the company. Such a
situation can never happen in India.'
'Are you trying to tell me an Indian would have handled this differently? '
'Bilkul. If it was an Indian firm, Lehman Brothers would have fought as soon
as their father died and divided in to three companies. They would have
diversified into clothing, polystyrene, petrochemicals, vegetables, movie
making, telecom, drilling oil, mobile phones, retailing, books, spectacles,
gyms, wellness. In short, anything and everything under the sun. They would
have made money for themselves and their shareholders. '
'But when there is massive failure there would be no option but to file for
bankruptcy?'
'Fail-wail chance hi nahin! Even if they encounter tough times, they would
have friends like Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh to bail them out. They could
finish off competition by befriending the finance minister and getting
duties levied on the imports of competition. They would fund and befriend
ruling parties. Unfortunately for Lehman Brothers in 2008, without a Lehman
on the board or some Indian business brothers at the top, they couldn't open
the survival kit to stay afloat.'
As we were sipping 'double kadak chai', I asked: 'Did anybody anticipate
this
global meltdown?'
'Anticipate? Mazak chodo! I will tell you something. America has some 45
Nobel laureates in economics from 1970. From 2000 alone there are 15 Nobel
laureates in econometrics sitting on company boards, treasury benches and in
places like Harvard, Stanford etc. Kisiko kuch patha nahin tha! How come
none of these had any inkling to the disaster awaiting the banking circles
all over the world? Even the finance ministers of G-7 talked of strong
'fundamentals' of world economy around this time last year! Two months
backthe
only topic they were discussing was the rise in oil prices.'
'What will happen if it goes all on like this?'
'Some American economist will study this, write a new a theory and get Nobel
Prize next year, dekhna. Seriously, they forgot things like control, double
check, systems-in-place etc and brought in vague words like Subprimes to
give loans left, right and centre.'
'What will happen to the Indian market?'
'It's already having the Lehman Brothers' effect. Our finance minister seems
to like the figure 60,000. While presenting the budget earlier in the year
he pledged Rs 60,000 crore to write off loans given to farmers. Now he is
pumping Rs 60,000 crore to help out the banks! I don't know what he will do
next. He is again from Harvard!'
'What is the lesson to be learnt from the Lehman Brothers' episode?' I asked
as we were leaving.
My friend took a spoonful of 'saunf' and said: 'You know, we have an old
elementary rule for keeping hisab-kithab. Divide a page into 'Left' and
'Right' with a line in the middle to denote Debit and Credit. In case of LB,
as somebody said, nothing was right in the 'Left' and nothing was left in
the 'Right',' concluded my Friend.

Lumbini park is one of the attractive leisure spots in the city. The park has a floral clock, nature trail, children’s play area, and musical fountains. The boating facility which is one of the major attractions is extended to the middle of the lake.
Lumbini Laserium:
The spectacular state of the laser show on the water screen with a musical fountain, is India’s first Multi media Laser Show, that narrates Hyderabad’s history, in a thrilling display of laser lights.
NTR Gardens:
A leisure and entertainment centre adjoining the Hussain Sagar Lake, the NTR Gardens houses a Memorial of Late Shri N.T. Rama Rao, former Chief Minister, with an exemplary piece of architecture.
The sprawling gardens, set up in an area of 36 acres, offers a serene atmosphere and yet provides recreation facilities such as Machan Tree, Japanese Garden, Car Café, Souvenir Shops, Fruit Restaurant and Children’s playing area. A mono rail system takes children around the Garden. It’s an amusement park with a difference…see it to believe it.
Sanjeevaiah Park:
One of the garden spots in Hyderabad is located near Hussain sagar lake. This park is well spread over with lush green trees meadows, beautiful landscaped gardens and play area for children. One of the significant features of the park is it has variety of high-breed rose plants of different colours. There is also a Rock Garden which is added attractions to the visitors.
Yogibear Children’s Park:
is located adjacent to Sanjeevaiah park. This park is an entertainment centre for children and toddlers. The park is b e a u t i f u l l y landscaped with small lawns. Play things like swinging bars, slides are added attractions for children. The park has a miniature Golf Tract of 19 holes, a snack bar and an event shed for conducting competitions.
Indira Park:
a recreation centre for children is situated near lower Tankbund. It is an excellent place for spending evening hours amid greenery and chirping of birds. The Park has a small lake with boating facility. It also has a rose garden with flowering, bushy trees. Adjacent to the park there is skating facility for children.
World’s Largest Monolith Statue of Buddha
The piece deresistance of the entire land and waterscape of Hussain Sagar is the 18-metre high and 350-tonne monolith of Gautama Buddha, in the middle of the lake, standing on what is known as the Rock of Gibraltar. Two beautifully decorated floating decks shuttle between the statue and the Lumbini
Park, every day, several times and are equipped to stage cultural and musical shows. Another boating point is likely to come up at the Sanjeevaiah Park also. The boat rides are the most exciting experience of the tourists because they cover the most scenic spots around the lake like the Secretariat, the Raj Bhavan, Sanjeeviah Park, the Lumbini Park, Shri Venkateswara temple and the majestic Buddha statue.
Birla Temple:
Hussain Sagar lake radiates in the night the reflection of the Shri Venkateswara temple built by the Birlas on a hillock close to the Secretariat. World’s Largest Monolith Statue of Buddha

life
One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well.
The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway;
it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him.
They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.
At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly.
Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well.
He was astonished at what he saw.
With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing.
He would shake it off and take a step up.
As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal,
he would shake it off and take a step up.
Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey
stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!
MORAL :
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt.
The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up.
Each of our troubles is a stepping stone.

Men's brain has lot of space for handling the analytical process. So easily he can analyze and find the solution for a process.
He can design (blue print) a map of a building easily.
If a complex map is viewed by women, she can not understand it. She can not understand the details of the map easily.
For her it is dump of lines in a paper.
CAR DRIVING.
While driving a car, men's analytical spaces are used in his brain. He can drive a car fastly. If he see an object at long distance, immediately his brain classifies the object (bus or van or car) direction and speed of the object and driving accordingly. Where as women take a long time to recognize the object direction/ speed. His single process mind stops the audio in the car (if any), then concentrating only on the driving.
You can often watch, while men driving the car fastly, the women sit next to him will shout, "GO SLOW" , "CARE FULL", "AAHHH", "OHH GOD.."

WOMEN ARE THE BEST DRIVERS

Many times, when men lie to women face to face, they got caught easily.
Her super natural brain observe the facial expression 70%, and the body language 20% and the words comes from mouth 10%. So he is easily caught while lieing.

So guys, While lieing to your girls, use phone, or letter or close all the lights or cover your/her face with blanket.

End of day, if men have lot of problems, his brain clearly classifies the problems and put into individual rooms of brain, the problems in individual room of brain and finding the solution one by one. You can see many guys looking on the sky's for a long times. If you disturb him, he gets irritated.

moral: whom to blame
Boy was born to a couple after eleven years of marriage. They were a loving couple and the boy was the gem of their eyes. When the boy was around two years old, one morning the husband saw a medicine bottle open.
He was late for office so he asked his wife to cap the bottle and keep it in the cupboard. His wife, preoccupied in the kitchen totally forgot the matter.
The boy saw the bottle and playfully went to the bottle fascinated by its color and drank it all. It happened to be a poisonous medicine meant for adults in small dosages. When the child collapsed the mother hurried him to the hospital, where he died. The mother was stunned. She was terrified how to face her husband.
When the distraught father came to the hospital and saw the dead child, he looked at his wife and uttered just five words.

danger. It has also been established that looking steadily at the screen for a
long time reduces the blinking frequency. This leads to the ‘Dry Eye Syndrome’.
In extreme cases, the cornea can dry up, affecting vision. In some cases, this
can also result in the loss of sight.
When you work
intensively on a computer, you may develop headaches, backache, sore or burning
eyes. In the first few months of intensively using a PC you may just ignore all
these problems. These are your body's natural ways of telling you that all is
not right in your eye’s relation with the PC. If left unattended, all these
factors may end up giving you CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome).

is caused by visual fatigue occurring due to constant shifting and focusing of
the eyes between the screen, document and keyboard, which is roughly about
25,000 times a day. The eyes have to accommodate, converge and adapt under
dissimilar ambient light on the keyboard, monitor and the document.

It is necessary to
understand that reading text from a computer screen is significantly different
from reading print-based materials. Unlike print-based materials which reflect
light, the computer monitor (the visual display unit, VDU) is a
self-illuminated object. Looking directly at the computer screen is somewhat
like looking into a light source. Less surrounding light may be needed or the
VDU may cause discomfort to the eyes. Poorly designed work environments may
thus accentuate the development of CVS.
Now let us take a look at some methods for
protecting our eyes. Following these measures will ensure that we are saved
from problems like CVS.
Go in for non-interlaced monitors. In many parts of the
world, such monitors are a norm. Not so in India.
Specify this detail to the hardware dealer before you buy a monitor. Most big
names have already started manufacturing non-interlaced monitors. If your
monitor is old, go over the manuals to check if it is non-interlaced. The
non-interlaced monitors have a high refresh rate and low flicker. Never buy a
monitor with a refresh rate less than 70 Hertz.
Adjust the furniture
and monitor position for a comfortable viewing distance and angle plus easy
access to the keyboard and other devices (e.g., a mouse). Most users prefer a
viewing distance of 50-66 centimeters (20-26 inches) from the eye to the
screen, or more, if large characters are displayed. Greater distance is
recommended, as this lessens the probability of visual discomfort since it
requires less convergence of the eyes and therefore, less eyestrain.
Appropriate screen location depends on eye position and line of sight. Since
the most comfortable line of sight is at least 10 degrees below horizontal, the
normal line of vision should be from the eye to the top of the screen.
Black font on a light background is easy on the
eyes. Light is broken up by the eye lens and is perceived as varying
wavelengths. The eye has to work harder to register colours than when seeing a
black and white picture. It is better that you do not work with fonts less than
7-point size.
Adjust
the brightness control or contrast knob (on some displays) to a comfortable
setting and use a task light, if needed, for working with printed material.
Glare from the screen
can usually be modified by lowering ambient light, drawing window covers
against bright light, wearing less reflective garments, choosing more
appropriate task lighting, and cleaning the display screen. Use fluorescent
tube lights or bio-lamps: these come closest to the spectral composition of
natural daylight.
Keep the display screen
clean, especially during conditions of low humidity (e.g., in the winter). This
is important as this reduces screen dust. Additionally, neutral-density or
micromesh filters may be helpful in enhancing contrast or reducing glare.

CVS
is caused by visual fatigue occurring due to constant shifting and focusing of
the eyes between the screen, document and keyboard, which is roughly about
25,000 times a day. The eyes have to accommodate, converge and adapt under
dissimilar ambient light on the keyboard, monitor and the document.
Go easy on your eyes[/b]
It is necessary to
understand that reading text from a computer screen is significantly different
from reading print-based materials. Unlike print-based materials which reflect
light, the computer monitor (the visual display unit, VDU) is a
self-illuminated object. Looking directly at the computer screen is somewhat
like looking into a light source. Less surrounding light may be needed or the
VDU may cause discomfort to the eyes. Poorly designed work environments may
thus accentuate the development of CVS.
Now let us take a look at some methods for
protecting our eyes. Following these measures will ensure that we are saved
from problems like CVS.
Go in for non-interlaced monitors. In many parts of the
world, such monitors are a norm. Not so in India.
Specify this detail to the hardware dealer before you buy a monitor. Most big
names have already started manufacturing non-interlaced monitors. If your
monitor is old, go over the manuals to check if it is non-interlaced. The
non-interlaced monitors have a high refresh rate and low flicker. Never buy a
monitor with a refresh rate less than 70 Hertz.
Adjust the furniture
and monitor position for a comfortable viewing distance and angle plus easy
access to the keyboard and other devices (e.g., a mouse). Most users prefer a
viewing distance of 50-66 centimeters (20-26 inches) from the eye to the
screen, or more, if large characters are displayed. Greater distance is
recommended, as this lessens the probability of visual discomfort since it
requires less convergence of the eyes and therefore, less eyestrain.
Appropriate screen location depends on eye position and line of sight. Since
the most comfortable line of sight is at least 10 degrees below horizontal, the
normal line of vision should be from the eye to the top of the screen.
Black font on a light background is easy on the
eyes. Light is broken up by the eye lens and is perceived as varying
wavelengths. The eye has to work harder to register colours than when seeing a
black and white picture. It is better that you do not work with fonts less than
7-point size.
Adjust
the brightness control or contrast knob (on some displays) to a comfortable
setting and use a task light, if needed, for working with printed material.
Glare from the screen
can usually be modified by lowering ambient light, drawing window covers
against bright light, wearing less reflective garments, choosing more
appropriate task lighting, and cleaning the display screen. Use fluorescent
tube lights or bio-lamps: these come closest to the spectral composition of
natural daylight.
Keep the display screen
clean, especially during conditions of low humidity (e.g., in the winter). This
is important as this reduces screen dust. Additionally, neutral-density or
micromesh filters may be helpful in enhancing contrast or reducing glare.
And finally, rest your eyes every few minutes. Look away from
your monitor at regular intervals.

This was how I saw it: As long as you keep your hand caringly open and allow it to remain there, it will always be there. However, if you attempt to close your fingers round it and try to posses it, it will spill through the first cracks it finds.
This is the greatest mistake that people do when they meet love...they try to posses it, they demand, they expect... and just like the water spilling out of your hand, love will retrieve from you .
For love is meant to be free, you cannot change its nature. If there are people you love, allow them to be free beings.

Allah Rakkhha Rahman great Indian music composer .Rahman served as a keyboard player and an arranger in bands such as "Roots" and "Nemesis Avenue" with friends including Sivamani. His curiosity in the synthesizer in particular increased because, he says, it was the “ideal combination of music and technology" Rahman began his own music recording and mixing studio, attached to backyard of his house, called the Panchathan Record Inn. In 1992, the first time he got chance to enter in film field, through a Malayalam film named Yodha. Its director Sangeeth Sivan who realise Rahman's talents already. And with this good entry he was approached by film director Mani Ratnam to compose the score and soundtrack for manirathnam Tamil film Roja. Rahman's instant success is owed to his clever usage of Western instruments to invoke Indian sounds while his peers tried to invoke Western sounds through Indian instruments. His interest in the works of Classical and Romantic period composers, Carnatic composers, early film composers and predecessors K. V. Mahadevan and Vishwanathan-Ramamoorthy of the film industry of Tamil Nadu and others continued through his late teens. He further explored and trained in Carnatic music, Western classical, Hindustani music and the Qawwali style of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, in addition to numerous other styles.

· Times of India publishes an American winning gold in Olympics……the same paper publishes India winning hockey in the last page.
· Cricket is our religion ------ Today everyone has lost interest in this religion.
· Everywhere it's raining…..its floods….. Mumbai faces this every year…..every year people die……still it's the same every year…..and Mumbai is back to its normal life within hours…. Life has lost its value.
· Bomb blast has become very common --- No one cares except for the families who have lost their loved ones.
· My friend got 98 percentile in CAT….. Still did not get any calls from IIMs. Other friend got 93 percentile still got qualified for IIM, as cast/religion really matters.
· Very few people have made India proud in sports (& these few were talented ones) ---- blame parents and government… as there is no encouragement.
· Parents want their child to be engineer or a doctor……. Every child wants to become an engineer or a doctor and work in America.

With a doubt, these developments in America are the most shocking events to have hit global financial markets. So where did it all begin? And what does it mean for the Indian stock markets? What is (or was) Lehman Brothers?
America's fourth-largest investment bank Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc has filed the biggest bankruptcy petition known to mankind.
The 158-year-old firm was founded by brothers Henry, Emanuel and Mayer Lehman, Jewish immigrants to the US from Germany, in 1850. Henry set up a general store in Alabama in 1844 and was later joined by his brothers. In 1850 they set up the merchant bank in New York after having made money in railway bonds. So what went wrong?
Lehman Bros, which till June 2008 had not reported a quarterly loss even once, had earlier survived many an economic crises, like railroad bankruptcies of the 1800s, the Great Depression in the 1930s, and the collapse of Long-Term Capital Management in the 1990s.
Thus the collapse of the giant investment bank came as a major shock for the entire world markets that plunged after Lehman filed a Chapter 11 petition with US Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan.
The $613 billion (some estimates put the size at $639 billion) bankruptcy thus throws up the question: why did the Wall Street giant go bust? Here's why. . .
Why did Lehman Brothers go bankrupt?
The giant investment bank succumbed to the sub-prime mortgage crisis that has rocked the United States and the global economy. Lehman was strangled by a massive credit crisis and fast plummeting real estate prices.
The gargantuan $60 billion loss in bad real estate loans forced the bank to file for bankruptcy.
However, the fall of the 158-year-year institution that started cotton trade in US before the American Civil War and financed the railroad that built a nation, got hit by a large dose of bad luck, pride, arrogance and greed. Primarily, the pride of its chief executive office Richard Fuld.
But there were more reason. Check out what they were.
Lehman's collapse was also triggered by the refusal of other banks to do business with it because of its complex and, at times, opaque ways of trading. Housing loans made by the bank to people with little support made these loans very risky, and when interest rates rose, these borrowers could no more repay Lehman. This led to huge losses, the extent of which is not yet clear.
Thus other banks stopped trading with Lehman. This led to it losing almost all business and triggered its fall.
The final straw for Lehman was the fact that both Barclays Plc of the United Kingdom and Bank of America Corp pulled out of takeover talks. BofA bought out Merrill Lynch for $50 billion.
However, Barclays has now said that it is in discussions with Lehman Brothers about buying certain assets of the stricken US investment bank.
"Barclays confirms that it is discussing with Lehman Brothers the possible acquisition of certain Lehman Brothers assets on terms that would be attractive to Barclay's shareholders," Britain's third largest bank said in a statement.
When other banks do not want to buy Lehman, why is Barclays interested?
Barclays wanted to buy Lehman out at a discount, so to speak. But when Lehman CEO Fuld decided that his bank was worth much more than what Barclays had apparently offered, Barclays stepped back.
Now that Lehman has filed for bankruptcy, its assets are available fairly cheap. However, the biggest problem is to take on Lehman's enormous liabilities.
How far is the CEO of the company responsible for Lehman's fall?
Wall Street analysts believe that it was the 'hubris' of Richard Fuld, the 62-year-old CEO of Lehman, who did not take the telltale signs of impending doom very seriously. Fuld, nicknamed The Gorilla for his foul temper, intimidating presence and tough talk, rejected many bids to save Lehman because he thought that the sinking giant was much bigger than Wall Street was giving it credit for, and wanted to get more price for the sale of the company.
Analysts say if the bank was sold just a week before it went kaput, it could have been saved the ignominy of a bankruptcy, but Fuld was far too adamant to see reason. Result: the end of a 158-year-old financial giant.
Could the United States government helped, like it helped Bear Stearns in May this year, and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac earlier this month?
The US government could have helped, but US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said that it would not use up any more taxpayer dollars to bail out Lehman Brothers as it would lead to investment banks getting away with their gambling ways. Paulson had bailed out Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Bear Stearns, saying that if the government had not done so, the US housing loan market would have collapsed leading to gigantic losses for hundreds of banks all over the globe that have invested in US property.
Paulson, however, believes that a brokerage major like Lehman, which does not have a direct connection with ordinary people who have taken on home loans, need not be bailed out as it would not cause any systemic damage to the US economy
Will everyone in Lehman lose their jobs?
The bankruptcy administrators, PricewaterhouseCoopers, feels that as Lehman's operations were essentially centralized at New York, the folding up of the investment banker in the US will have a telling impact on all its operations globally.
Over 5,000 employees in the UK have already lost their jobs, while about 20,000 in the US might as well forget going back to their work stations. About 2,500 Lehman employees in India too face the axe.
Will the whole bank be liquidated?
Unlikely, at least for now. The US Chapter 11 that deals with bankruptcy says that PwC, the administrators, can go about taking its time to find good offers and buyers for Lehman's 'least affected businesses.'
The entire exercise can take months before all of Lehman's assets are sold, given the complexities linked to the bankruptcy.
What about the Bank of America and Merrill Lynch deal?
Merrill Lynch's buy out by Bank of America is also a shocking development. ML, saw the writing on the wall once it guessed that Lehman was going bust, and decided to sell out before it actually has to file a bankruptcy petition..
What about the insurance giant AIG?
The world's largest insurer, American International Group, has been downgraded by credit rating agencies and is racing against time to find a multi billion dollar infusion to stay afloat. US Federal Reserve officials and two leading banks, JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, were negotiating to put together $75 billion package to save the insurance giant to stave off crisis.
AIG has sought $40 billion in bridge loan to stave off the crisis. But the Fed rebuffed the request. AIG's ills came to fore, when three leading credit rating agencies - Standard and Poor's Moody's and Fitch - lowered the company's credit scores.
Who could be the next to fall?
Some Wall Street analysts, reports The Guardian, name Washington Mutual as the next financial major to 'find itself in serious trouble.'
However, the even bigger worry is whether the world's largest securities firms, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, would be able to survive this brutal financial crisis. But many say that these two gaints will not melt down as they have 'done a better job of spreading their bets across world markets and are also more diversified, less leveraged and have managed such risks much better.'
What do Indian markets fear?
The fall of two global financial behemoths -- Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch -- is expected to dent India Inc's ability to raise resources via the equity route.
Experts feel that such events significantly increase the risk perception, which in turn will put all future investments by institutional investors such as pension or endowment funds, on the back burner.
While the public issue market has already dried up, the private equity funds are also becoming conservative in terms of pricing. This is resulting in either inordinate delays in concluding deals or transactions being called off.
There are many instances of private equity fund managers refusing to go ahead with deals after signing the term sheet. Sources said that a leading fund conducted due diligence on two companies in the last fortnight but did not close either deal primarily because of the developments in the US, their home country.
The crisis faced by Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers is expected to have a cascading effect on PE firms too.
Will it hit the Indian growth story?
The ongoing financial sector crisis in the United States and its repercussions on developed markets worldwide will result in lower capital inflows into emerging markets like India, economists and government officials said today.
At the same time, they called for the government to make it easier for Indian companies to borrow overseas by easing the restrictions that have been imposed in the past to reduce excessive liquidity in the system and control inflation.
This will, in turn, lead to a slowing in investment growth in the months ahead. As lending gets tighter and investment flows dry, corporate India will find it more difficult to raise both equity and debt.
Technology firms are shivering
Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy filing may well prove to be the last straw for Indian IT firms, which were expecting the second half of FY09 to be better. As a result of the US financial market crisis, analysts do not expect Indian IT firms to sign any significant contracts in the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) space in the months to come.
While IT firms do not disclose client-specific details, it's estimated that Lehman Brothers has outsourced deals amounting to anywhere between Rs 550 crore and Rs 700 crore (annually) to numerous IT firms, including majors like Tata Consultancy Services, Satyam Computer Services and Wipro. Lehman Brothers, say sources, works with 14 services providers in India - Wipro and TCS being the largest. It also has investments in a few IT firms. It's not clear if these holdings will be liquidated to raise funds.
Moreover, the sources add that Lehman Brothers' unit in India has issued termination letters to a majority of its 2,500 employees.
What kind of investment does Lehman have in India?
Lehman does not have direct large holding in the Indian stock markets. These holdings are estimated at around $200 million, including Participatory Notes. This figure is not enough to cripple the Indian stock markets.
But Lehman has exposure to the Indian stock market through special purpose vehicles. This exposure to real estate stocks is said to be of about $1.5 billion, enough to shake up the markets.

Thus the collapse of the giant investment bank came as a major shock for the entire world markets that plunged after Lehman filed a Chapter 11 petition with US Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan.
The $613 billion (some estimates put the size at $639 billion) bankruptcy thus throws up the question: why did the Wall Street giant go bust? Here's why. . .
Why did Lehman Brothers go bankrupt?
The giant investment bank succumbed to the sub-prime mortgage crisis that has rocked the United States and the global economy. Lehman was strangled by a massive credit crisis and fast plummeting real estate prices.
The gargantuan $60 billion loss in bad real estate loans forced the bank to file for bankruptcy.
However, the fall of the 158-year-year institution that started cotton trade in US before the American Civil War and financed the railroad that built a nation, got hit by a large dose of bad luck, pride, arrogance and greed. Primarily, the pride of its chief executive office Richard Fuld.
But there were more reason. Check out what they were.
Lehman's collapse was also triggered by the refusal of other banks to do business with it because of its complex and, at times, opaque ways of trading. Housing loans made by the bank to people with little support made these loans very risky, and when interest rates rose, these borrowers could no more repay Lehman. This led to huge losses, the extent of which is not yet clear.
Thus other banks stopped trading with Lehman. This led to it losing almost all business and triggered its fall.
The final straw for Lehman was the fact that both Barclays Plc of the United Kingdom and Bank of America Corp pulled out of takeover talks. BofA bought out Merrill Lynch for $50 billion.
However, Barclays has now said that it is in discussions with Lehman Brothers about buying certain assets of the stricken US investment bank.
"Barclays confirms that it is discussing with Lehman Brothers the possible acquisition of certain Lehman Brothers assets on terms that would be attractive to Barclay's shareholders," Britain's third largest bank said in a statement.
When other banks do not want to buy Lehman, why is Barclays interested?
Barclays wanted to buy Lehman out at a discount, so to speak. But when Lehman CEO Fuld decided that his bank was worth much more than what Barclays had apparently offered, Barclays stepped back.
Now that Lehman has filed for bankruptcy, its assets are available fairly cheap. However, the biggest problem is to take on Lehman's enormous liabilities.
How far is the CEO of the company responsible for Lehman's fall?
Wall Street analysts believe that it was the 'hubris' of Richard Fuld, the 62-year-old CEO of Lehman, who did not take the telltale signs of impending doom very seriously. Fuld, nicknamed The Gorilla for his foul temper, intimidating presence and tough talk, rejected many bids to save Lehman because he thought that the sinking giant was much bigger than Wall Street was giving it credit for, and wanted to get more price for the sale of the company.
Analysts say if the bank was sold just a week before it went kaput, it could have been saved the ignominy of a bankruptcy, but Fuld was far too adamant to see reason. Result: the end of a 158-year-old financial giant.
Could the United States government helped, like it helped Bear Stearns in May this year, and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac earlier this month?
The US government could have helped, but US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said that it would not use up any more taxpayer dollars to bail out Lehman Brothers as it would lead to investment banks getting away with their gambling ways. Paulson had bailed out Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Bear Stearns, saying that if the government had not done so, the US housing loan market would have collapsed leading to gigantic losses for hundreds of banks all over the globe that have invested in US property.
Paulson, however, believes that a brokerage major like Lehman, which does not have a direct connection with ordinary people who have taken on home loans, need not be bailed out as it would not cause any systemic damage to the US economy
Will everyone in Lehman lose their jobs?
The bankruptcy administrators, PricewaterhouseCoopers, feels that as Lehman's operations were essentially centralized at New York, the folding up of the investment banker in the US will have a telling impact on all its operations globally.
Over 5,000 employees in the UK have already lost their jobs, while about 20,000 in the US might as well forget going back to their work stations. About 2,500 Lehman employees in India too face the axe.
Will the whole bank be liquidated?
Unlikely, at least for now. The US Chapter 11 that deals with bankruptcy says that PwC, the administrators, can go about taking its time to find good offers and buyers for Lehman's 'least affected businesses.'
The entire exercise can take months before all of Lehman's assets are sold, given the complexities linked to the bankruptcy.
What about the Bank of America and Merrill Lynch deal?
Merrill Lynch's buy out by Bank of America is also a shocking development. ML, saw the writing on the wall once it guessed that Lehman was going bust, and decided to sell out before it actually has to file a bankruptcy petition..
What about the insurance giant AIG?
The world's largest insurer, American International Group, has been downgraded by credit rating agencies and is racing against time to find a multi billion dollar infusion to stay afloat. US Federal Reserve officials and two leading banks, JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, were negotiating to put together $75 billion package to save the insurance giant to stave off crisis.
AIG has sought $40 billion in bridge loan to stave off the crisis. But the Fed rebuffed the request. AIG's ills came to fore, when three leading credit rating agencies - Standard and Poor's Moody's and Fitch - lowered the company's credit scores.
Who could be the next to fall?
Some Wall Street analysts, reports The Guardian, name Washington Mutual as the next financial major to 'find itself in serious trouble.'
However, the even bigger worry is whether the world's largest securities firms, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, would be able to survive this brutal financial crisis. But many say that these two gaints will not melt down as they have 'done a better job of spreading their bets across world markets and are also more diversified, less leveraged and have managed such risks much better.'
What do Indian markets fear?
The fall of two global financial behemoths -- Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch -- is expected to dent India Inc's ability to raise resources via the equity route.
Experts feel that such events significantly increase the risk perception, which in turn will put all future investments by institutional investors such as pension or endowment funds, on the back burner.
While the public issue market has already dried up, the private equity funds are also becoming conservative in terms of pricing. This is resulting in either inordinate delays in concluding deals or transactions being called off.
There are many instances of private equity fund managers refusing to go ahead with deals after signing the term sheet. Sources said that a leading fund conducted due diligence on two companies in the last fortnight but did not close either deal primarily because of the developments in the US, their home country.
The crisis faced by Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers is expected to have a cascading effect on PE firms too.
Will it hit the Indian growth story?
The ongoing financial sector crisis in the United States and its repercussions on developed markets worldwide will result in lower capital inflows into emerging markets like India, economists and government officials said today.
At the same time, they called for the government to make it easier for Indian companies to borrow overseas by easing the restrictions that have been imposed in the past to reduce excessive liquidity in the system and control inflation.
This will, in turn, lead to a slowing in investment growth in the months ahead. As lending gets tighter and investment flows dry, corporate India will find it more difficult to raise both equity and debt.
Technology firms are shivering
Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy filing may well prove to be the last straw for Indian IT firms, which were expecting the second half of FY09 to be better. As a result of the US financial market crisis, analysts do not expect Indian IT firms to sign any significant contracts in the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) space in the months to come.
While IT firms do not disclose client-specific details, it's estimated that Lehman Brothers has outsourced deals amounting to anywhere between Rs 550 crore and Rs 700 crore (annually) to numerous IT firms, including majors like Tata Consultancy Services, Satyam Computer Services and Wipro. Lehman Brothers, say sources, works with 14 services providers in India - Wipro and TCS being the largest. It also has investments in a few IT firms. It's not clear if these holdings will be liquidated to raise funds.
Moreover, the sources add that Lehman Brothers' unit in India has issued termination letters to a majority of its 2,500 employees.
What kind of investment does Lehman have in India?
Lehman does not have direct large holding in the Indian stock markets. These holdings are estimated at around $200 million, including Participatory Notes. This figure is not enough to cripple the Indian stock markets.
But Lehman has exposure to the Indian stock market through special purpose vehicles. This exposure to real estate stocks is said to be of about $1.5 billion, enough to shake up the markets.

"Amarajeevi" Potti Sreeramulu
Potti Sreeramulu (16 March 1901 -16 December 1952 and transliterated as Potti Sriramulu and Potti Sri ramulu) was an Indian revolutionary . He became famous for undertaking a fast-unto-death for achieving the state of Andhra and losing his life in the process. His sacrifice became instrumental in the linguistic re-organisation of states. He is revered as Amarajeevi (Immortal being) in Andhra Pradesh for his sacrifice. As a devout follower of Mahatma Gandhi, he worked life long to uphold principles such as truth and non-violence and objectives such as Harijan upliftment.
